Review of Friday racing

Beyond the Clouds (Doncaster 4.55) was another fantastic WINNER for us at 15-2. Not quite the 14-1 as quoted in the Racing Post, but there was plenty of 10-1 plus around on the exchanges so I hope some of you managed to take advantage of that. The technique of backing two horses (or more occasionally) in a the same race has been a very successful method this year in some of the big field sprints and I will continue to apply this technique whenever the situation looks right to do so. The other bet in the race Sir Sandrovitch was well backed into favourite, but did not trouble the judge. The overall analysis of the race was pleasing as well, with the 1st, 3rd and 5th (of 20) on the initial six horse shortlist.

In the Goodwood 4.15 Bishopstown Man ws in the thick of 2 furlongs out, but faded in the final furlong.

Only one other race discussed and one horse - Atlantic Ace (2.35 Goodwood) won at 6-1.

Saturday racing

First race to look at is the handicap sprint at Goodwood - the 2.45. High numbers have held the advantage for most of the year Here are some of the candidates :

Barrantes - was put up as a bet earlier in the week in a much weaker contest than this. Unfortunately the weather intervened at Bath and the meeting was abandoned. Well drawn today in 16, and the 14-1 with the Tote looks worth an interest.

Baby Barry - 4th here last time when 2nd of the stands' side group behind Halmahera (winner of Portland for us this week since). Duffield in the plate should be a plus and hopefully the horse will go centre to far side with the high numbers from the 10 stall.

Tolyda- good winner at Kempton last time from a mediocre draw. Moving steadily up the weights, but well drawn in 17 and looks to have sound claims.

Al Muallim - now with Andrew Reid who has done well with older horses such as Fire Dome and Further Outlook. Well drawn in 18 and two bookies have been rather generous with their early morning prices - Hills go 28-1 and Chandlers go 33-1. Each way squeak.

Fearby Cross - drawn 13 and running reasonably well. Has been well backed this season a couple of times - had no luck in running on one of those occasions. Another one with a chance in an open contest.

Golden Dixie - difficult to assess having had only two runs. Could be a lot better than these seasoned campaigners, but looks too risky at the early morning prices. Also the low draw is a concern, although Spencer is one of those jockeys who can overcome these things.

To conclude : Baby Barry is 12-1 with the Tote so if you can get that price all the better. This is my selection. The horse won this race last year and should go close again. I hope Duffield does not bring the horse stands' side. Tolyda and Barrantes are big dangers.

Other thoughts :

Doncaster 2.25 - Wunders Dream is back to 5f which will suit. The ground may be a touch lively, but she has speed to burn.

Curragh 2.40 - Dancing Mystery would have been interesting on good to soft or softer. The horse comes good at this time of year and I would hope for a bold show even on this lively ground.

Goodwood 3.55 - Palace Affair is another horse that would prefer more ease in the ground, but should still go well in this sprint.

Nothing much else on a relatively quiet Saturday for a change.
